Japan started whaling operation after the 30-year ban and was criticised globally for this decision. Japan halted its commercial whaling activities in 1986 but still did under the name of scientific research.

Previously, countries such as Iceland and Norway which are major players in the whaling industry has been hacked by the famous hactivist group “Anonymous”. Majorly, the prime minister and other ministries website was hacked.

On Dec 8, 2015, Japan’s Prime Minister website was hacked by the whaling protesters and the responsibility was claimed by the anonymous group. In, Jan 2016, Nissan Japan website was hacked by the group Anonymous to protest the whaling. In Feb 2016 the three ministries website that is Japan External Trade Organisation’s, Japan Securities Finance Co.’s and Japan’s National Tax Agency.

I monitored the hashtags #boycottjapan2020, #dontvisitjapan, #fuckjapan, #banjapan and #savethewhales from June 24th, 2019 till July 3rd, 2019. The use of hashtags is increased when Japan officially started whaling on July 1st,2019. As per the data, people are unhappy with the restart of the operations in Japan. Some data suggest that international travellers are cancelling their trips to Japan in protest of whaling.

Figure 1: Measuring the engagement of Hashtags

I did the link analysis of the Iceland, Japan and Norway which were hacked by the group anonymous. I have used the open-source intelligence software Maltego to map out the organisations hacked due to whaling activities. It is highly probable that Japan will be hacked again by anonymous due to its whaling activities.
